What's the difference between the Single Speed and the Eight Speed?
Both the 1Speed and 8Speed are made with aluminum frames and rust-busting chains and both feature theft-resistant hardware.
That said, there are a 2 key differences that might make one a better choice for you:
1. The 8Speed has gears, which will allow you pedal more efficiently.
This is particularly helpful when going uphill, as the added gears will save you a lot of effort.
2. The 8Speed has disc brakes.
Disc brakes are extremely responsive and provide incredible “stopping power.” They do require a little bit more maintenance (not much, just in comparison to the single speed caliper brakes, which require little to none), but you can really feel the difference, especially on slick pavement.
To summarize, your choice will likely come down to a combination of personal preference and where you’ll be riding: if you have a hilly commute (think San Francisco) or really want top end brakes, you’ll probably want to go with the 8speed. If you’re in a flat city (think NYC) and don’t need the extra gears, the single speed will be a great choice.
Best of all: no matter which you choose, you really can’t go wrong ; )
